What is skinny fat?
Skinny fat is an informal name for a body type: a normal weight for your height, often a normal BMI, with relatively little muscle and a relatively high share of body fat. In clothes you look slim. Out of them you look soft, with little shape in the shoulders, arms and legs and fat carried around the middle. Some research papers call a similar pattern normal-weight obesity, but skinny fat is a fitness description rather than a medical diagnosis, and nobody needs a scan to use it.
The reason the label matters is that it changes the plan. Someone who is skinny fat usually does not need to lose much weight at all. They need to gain muscle and lose some fat at the same time, which is the same process the rest of this site calls body transformation coaching.
